the sudden outburst
of caribbean crickets
at dusk

I wondered

what makes them
all shout out so loud
at the setting sun

the next morning
we were wakened
just before dawn
by a billion birds

and I heard

the predators prayer
for a lifegiving kill
in the coming day

that raises cacophonies of joy
every night in all prey
who survived it
